But how much of Christ Himself do we give?

“Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in me, and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.” (John 15:4-5)

“The apostles returned to Jesus, and told him all that they had done and taught. And he said to them, ‘Come away by yourselves to a lonely place, and rest a while.’ For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat.” (Mark 6:30-32)

Jesus sent His disciples to preach, to heal, and to serve. But often commanded them to return and rest in Him. Notice what’s happening in Mark’s account: the apostles had poured themselves out in ministry, surrounded by crowds so demanding “they had no leisure even to eat.” Jesus didn’t urge them to push harder. Instead, He called them away. The work would continue, but not before they took time for renewal.

The Christian life isn’t one of constant motion but continual abiding: the habitual turning inward to the indwelling Christ. Our culture prizes output, results, and visibility. Yet the Lord teaches that fruitfulness is not born of our effort alone; it flows from union with Him.

Subscribe now

What Does It Mean to Be Contemplative?

We have an abundant supply of activists and agendas. What the world is sorely lacking are contemplatives in the ordinary daily life: men and women whose actions are steeped in prayer, whose work moves from a heart rooted in God’s presence.

To be contemplative, in the Catholic understanding, is not to withdraw from reality but to participate in it more deeply. It means cultivating a steady awareness of God that runs deeper than distraction, a loving attention that perceives His presence within all things. The contemplative soul meets the world’s demands from an interior stillness where Christ already dwells.

This is the abiding Christ spoke of. It’s a life that draws its strength from union with Him and gives that life back to the world.

Only those who remain in Christ can carry His presence into the messiness of daily life.

Doing Without Being

If something is urgent, we assume it must also be important. If it’s esteemed, we assume it’s valuable. Even in our work for the Church, we hurry to organize, to produce, to speak, often before we have stopped to connect and listen.

The danger is not activity itself but activity detached from interior life. Dom Jean-Baptiste Chautard saw this temptation more than a century ago and named it for what it is: spiritual barrenness disguised as zeal. He warned,

“The interior life, that is, a life of prayer and sacrifice, is the soul of every apostolate, and without it, the apostolate is a mere phantom.”

A phantom looks alive but has no substance. So do our good works when they no longer draw strength from communion with Christ. The meetings, ministries, and metrics rage on, but the fire that gives them life fades.

Without the hidden root of prayer, even apostolic labor becomes self-referential. We end up offering others what we have made instead of what God has given. We draw from our limited resources instead of His inexhaustible grace.

The first task of every disciple is therefore not to do something for God, but to be someone through whom God can act.

Prayer and Work United

Dom Chautard shows the danger of activism without interior life. Brother Lawrence shows the beauty of prayer and work moving as one.

He lived in a busy monastery kitchen, surrounded by noise and interruption. Yet in that ordinary labor he found a stillness more profound than silence itself.

He wrote,

“We should establish ourselves in a sense of God’s presence, by continually conversing with Him.”

That single line reveals an entire way of life. For Brother Lawrence, the presence of God was not reserved for the chapel; it could fill the scent of baking bread, the clatter of dishes, the natural hum of the day. He once said he found God in the kitchen “as well as upon my knees at the Blessed Sacrament.”

This is the harmony of ora et labora, prayer and work. He didn’t divide the day between holy hours and worldly ones; he carried the same conversation with God through both. Each labor of the day became an act of love because his heart stayed turned toward the One he loved.

When prayer permeates action, work becomes worship; when the heart abides, even the office becomes a cloister.

Subscribe now

Contemplatives in Action

The invitation that shaped monks and mystics was never meant for cloisters alone. This vision found powerful expression in the early writings of Thomas Merton (before his engagement with Eastern spirituality). Merton taught that the contemplative vocation extends to every baptized person, and the world itself can become the place where we meet God. The false choice between prayer and action, between cloister and city, is not real. What the world needs are souls so rooted in God that they carry His peace into the chaos.

Every baptized soul is called to bring God’s presence into the world it inhabits. The teacher at her desk, the parent in the car line, and the nurse at a bedside all can live the same rhythm that sustained Brother Lawrence in the kitchen and Dom Chautard in the abbey.

Consider the teacher who begins her morning not by reviewing lesson plans but by offering the day to Christ. Throughout the day, between classes or during a chaotic passing period, she returns to Him with a whispered prayer: “For You, Lord.”

When a struggling student lingers after class, anxious about a test, she doesn’t just offer study tips. She listens, fully present, unhurried despite the stack of papers waiting to be graded.

In that moment, something within the student comes alive. He can’t name it, but he senses he’s been seen, truly seen, perhaps for the first time all week. What mattered in that moment wasn’t her classroom management skills; it was that she brought the stillness of God into the hallway’s noise.

Or take the nurse working the late shift in an understaffed emergency room. The pace is relentless, the needs overwhelming, suffering in every face. Yet she has learned to meet chaos from a place of interior peace.

Between patients, she whispers the Jesus Prayer: “Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy.” At a bedside, holding the hand of a frightened patient, she can be fully present to him because she has practiced being fully present to God.

Her attention is undivided. In her touch, the patient encounters a tenderness that doesn’t come from her but through her. She carries the silence of God into the throes of human suffering.

The Church’s deepest renewal will never begin with more committees or louder voices but with souls who live from the inside out, where Christ already dwells.

The world is waiting not for what Christians can accomplish but for what Christ can accomplish through Christians who abide in Him.

Living Contemplative Life

The contemplative life is a continual return to God within. In the ordinary course of work and rest, every place can become a meeting place with Him. Here is how you can begin living as a contemplative in your own life.

1. Begin the day in recollection.

Before the day begins to pull at you, pause for a morning prayer. Offer the day to God with a few honest words of trust or gratitude. Let the first voice you seek be His.

2. Let prayer accompany work.

Carry a few simple prayers and repeat them often through the day—Jesus, I trust in You, My God, I love You, or Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me. Such brief acts of love keep the heart turned toward God in the midst of our work.

3. Return often and without shame.

When you forget, don’t despair. Simply start up again. Brother Lawrence said each return is an act of love and strengthens perseverance; failure is only another chance to turn back.

4. Close the day with gratitude.

At day’s end, take a few quiet moments with God. Recall where He was present and thank Him for those graces. Look also at the places you stumbled, not to dwell on them, but to offer them to Him in love. Say simply, “Lord, thank You for being with me today. Help me to be better tomorrow.”

So be the contemplative the world so desperately needs. When your soul rests in God, His peace will move through you, filling every corner of your life and lifting every soul you meet.

Subscribe now

Share

Sources referenced:

Dom Jean-Baptiste Chautard, The Soul of the Apostolate

Brother Lawrence, The Practice of the Presence of God

Thomas Merton, New Seeds of Contemplation

The One Thing Necessary

We tell ourselves we don’t have time to pray.

Phil Hill | Interior Mastery

We tell ourselves we don’t have time to pray. Once life slows down, we’ll find the time. But life rarely slows down. And prayer, though we know it matters, is usually the first thing to get sidelined.

Why is that?

The Gospel That Answers the Question

“But the Lord answered her, ‘Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things; one thing is needful. Mary has chosen the good portion, which shall not be taken away from her.’” (Luke 10:41–42, RSVCE)

The scene is simple: two sisters, one room, one Lord. Martha moves while Mary listens. Jesus names what Martha cannot see: that her work has lost its center. When our service loses its object, it becomes agitation. Mary hasn’t abandoned her duty, she’s focused on its source.

The “one thing necessary” is the priority. But holiness isn’t found in perfect schedules but in transformed attention. Brother Lawrence understood this better than most.

In seventeenth-century France, a lay Carmelite known as Brother Lawrence spent most of his life in a monastery kitchen. He wasn’t a theologian or a preacher. He scrubbed pots, baked bread, and mended shoes. Yet amid the clatter of work, he found what many fail to find.

Brother Lawrence never separated prayer from life. His way was not a set of steps but a continual returning of the heart. He believed that to love God in everything was simpler than it seemed. It was a matter of turning, again and again, toward His presence.

He wrote simply: “We should establish ourselves in a sense of God’s presence, by continually conversing with Him.”

For him, this conversation began in the morning and ran quietly through the day. When he worked in the kitchen, he found God there “as well as upon my knees at the Blessed Sacrament.” He spoke with God “freely and simply,” as one friend speaks with another.

His approach was to set a rhythm. He began each morning by offering his first moments to God. Throughout the day, he continued the conversation, whispering to God inwardly in every duty and interruption, not to gain a feeling but to stay in connection. When he forgot, he simply returned. “When I fail,” he said, “I acknowledge it, and I turn to Him with greater trust.” At night, he thanked God for His companionship through the day, confident that grace would do the rest.

This was the secret of his peace. division vs. unity? I long for unity. But at the same time, I feel this deep fire to call out the things that are hurting the Church. The poor catechesis, the confusion in its teaching, and the compromises that lead people away from the truth.

In my younger years, I was very bold and wouldn’t hesitate. In many ways that is admirable and not a fault. Yet as I’ve aged, I see one reason to take pause, at least for a moment before we speak out.

We are constantly confronted with issues where criticism is necessary. But before we speak, we should confront ourselves with one question:

What does my own prayer life look like?

Consider our interior disposition. Are we speaking from God’s grace or from pride? From zeal for truth or from anger or fear?

The fire Jesus talks about isn’t meant to destroy; it’s meant to purify. It burns away the ways we’ve made peace with sin.

If what we speak isn’t produced from an overflowing abundance of grace spilling out from our hearts, or comes from a heart that still grants quarter to our own sins, then we are at great risk of spreading a fire that destroys rather than purifies.

The fire that Jesus wants to kindle has to start in us first. We all wish the Church, or its people, were already ablaze so we could draw warmth from them. But that may be the problem.

The blaze begins in us when we let God fill us with His fire and allow Him to purify our own hearts first. That is the source of a fire that heals and spreads in the world around us.

If we’re not cultivating that within our own soul, then we are at least partly responsible for the lack of that blaze we desire in the world.

Share

Subscribe now

What is the Spiritual Life?

What does it really mean to live the spiritual life?

Phil Hill | Interior Mastery

What does it really mean to live the spiritual life?

Is it prayer? Good behavior? Going to Mass every Sunday? Feeling close to God?

We often confuse the spiritual life with religious activity or emotional experience. But we can find examples everywhere of people engaged in religious activities who do not have the peace or dispositions that overflow from a soul filled with God’s grace. We all experience emotional movements at times and feel those movements fade away. The spiritual life is not something we build by effort. It is not something that depends on emotional feelings. Rather, it’s a gift that we receive and learn to cooperate with. The spiritual life is God’s own life living within the soul.

Subscribe now

You already share in this life. From baptism onward, grace has been at work within you. Through every confession, every communion, every prayer made in faith, the divine life grows. The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit truly dwell in you.

St. Peter describes it this way:

“He has granted to us his precious and very great promises, that through these you may escape from the corruption that is in the world because of passion, and become partakers of the divine nature.”

-2 Peter 1:4

The Church’s entire definition of the spiritual life can be summed up in that single phrase, “partakers of the divine nature”. This divine life is always available for us to receive. The task before us now is learning to live in constant openness to that grace and allow it to shape every part of our lives.

“If this divine life were better understood, we should realize that it is infinitely superior to any natural perfection of the soul, and that our greatest duty is to guard and increase it by fidelity.”

-Reginald Garrigou-Lagrange, The Three Ages of the Interior Life, Vol. 1, Ch. 1

Lagrange confronts us with an important challenge.

The spiritual life isn’t just moral improvement or an emotion of devotion. It’s the surrendering of your life to God. It’s an openness to His grace that allows a transformation to take place within you. This isn’t something that can be done by natural means or by any effort on our part alone. We will make efforts in the spiritual life, but all of those will fail without an offering and response to grace.

Sometimes we will have to struggle through this for long periods of time. We’re not going to overcome or achieve these advancements quickly. In the beginning, perfection doesn’t come about by simply doing the right things and avoiding the wrong things. It comes from perseverance and staying with God’s grace when things are difficult, when we’re failing, when we don’t feel anything at all. That’s what keeps the divine life alive and growing in us. Fidelity in those moments is what allows grace to do its hidden work of transformation in the soul and ultimately achieve the levels of perfection we so desperately desire.

A Note Before You Reflect

When you work through these reflection questions, don’t be afraid of the answers. Answer them honestly, even if you think they’re not the “right” answers or the ones you should be giving. You need to start building the habit of letting yourself recognize things as they really are.

God already knows your heart. But a lot of times we hold things back from Him because we don’t feel like they’re fit to bring into prayer, or we think we should already be somewhere else spiritually. The problem is, when we hold these things back, we’re not allowing God to get in there and do anything with them.

By this, you’re not telling God anything He doesn’t already know. But, you are giving Him access to parts of you He doesn’t yet have. You have to learn how to be vulnerable and honest especially if you’re not where you want to be. Your ability to acknowledge the truth and lay it before Him is absolutely necessary for real transformation to begin.

<a It is a mirror exposing the rot of our modern culture.

For years, America has mocked, suppressed, and demonized traditional masculinity. We are told that courage, strength, and the willingness to protect at personal cost are “toxic.” Meanwhile, the traits that once formed men into guardians have been traded for weakness, effeminacy, and self-absorption.

Our society has also redefined “virtue” into something shallow... social media posturing, slogans, and grandstanding. Too often, virtue today is about appearing good rather than being good. It is about outsourcing sacrifice to others rather than bearing it yourself.

But true virtue is not self-made, nor is it cultivated in the court of public opinion. It is forged in the hidden life, in union with God, through daily discipline, mortification, and the grace of the sacraments. It grows only when we deny ourselves and train our souls to face fear, temptation, and hardship.

This is why, when the moment of testing came, when a defenseless woman needed protection, assistance and justice, most of the men fled. A culture apart from God, that suppresses manly virtue, cannot produce protectors. It produces cowards.

The Catholic tradition has always known: courage is not improvised in the moment. It is trained, it is built through prayer, it is given by God’s grace. Without Him, men collapse into self-preservation. With Him, they are capable of heroic sacrifice.

If we want a culture where men stand instead of run, where protectors rise instead of flee, then we must return to the source: God Himself, the giver of courage, sacrificial love, justice and all true virtue.

Virtue and the Jewelry Store

A Reflection on Cooperation with Grace

Phil Hill | Interior Mastery

Reflecting on paragraph 1804 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, which teaches that human virtues are "firm attitudes, stable dispositions, habitual perfections of intellect and will," I focused on how these qualities must be cultivated through practice and repetition until they become part of our nature. This reminded me of my time managing jewelry stores and how I approached training, knowing that building a successful new associate required the same persistent, incremental approach.

I never immediately placed them on the bridal counter, selling engagement rings and bridal sets. Those were our most delicate and high-stakes transactions. Instead, I began them with watches or fashion jewelry. These were lower-pressure items where they could build some foundational skills.

Subscribe now

And I didn’t just throw a training manual at them and expect them to figure it out on their own. I spent time with them, guided them, reassured them. But there was always a point where I’d say, “Now it’s your turn.” I supplied them with study materials that would build and test their knowledge, practice assignments, and encouraged them to pair with others—either peers who were learning alongside them or experienced staff who could offer their knowledge and feedback. I was there for them, but I wouldn’t do it all for them.

The ones who took initiative, who studied, practiced, sought help, and grew, I was more than willing to invest more time in them. Why? Because they respected the process. They took what I gave them and made something more of it. My effort in them produced good results by the effort they applied themselves.

In fact, I had a general rule that for every hour I spent with them in training, they should be spending at least 10 times that on themselves. That could include studying product specifications, practicing their approach with role-play scenarios, and reviewing what they'd learned. I expected that they make a personal investment. It wasn’t that I just wanted to see them do the work, but I knew that true mastery of the craft only came from study, practice, feedback and repetition.

That’s how God forms virtue in us.

He doesn’t just hand us a Bible and say, “Figure it out.” Nor does He do all the work for us while we passively wait. He gives us grace, but He also gives us responsibilities. He guides us personally through prayer, the Church, and the sacraments. But then He also expects us to study, to reflect, to practice virtue, to seek out fellowship and mentorship from others in the faith.

And just like I didn't promote someone to the bridal counter unless they'd mastered the basics, God doesn't pour out deeper graces or responsibilities on us until we've shown we're ready. Not that we earn them through our performance, but because we need to learn how to cooperate with the grace He's already given us and prove faithful in building the foundation.

Otherwise, like a new associate selling a $5,000 ring they're unprepared for, we'd be set up for failure and quite possibly do harm to others in the process by giving poor counsel when someone seeks spiritual guidance, taking on leadership roles we're not ready for, or attempting to mentor others when we ourselves haven't yet developed the virtues we're trying to teach.

Subscribe now

Created for Union with God

Introduction to Catholic Spiritual Formation: Part 1

Phil Hill | Interior Mastery

Every human heart carries a restlessness—a deep sense that we were made for something more than what this world offers.

You've felt it. important clue about who you are and why you exist.

The deepest yearning of our hearts is not what most people think. It's not the next promotion, the perfect relationship, or even the resolution of our problems. These things may bring temporary satisfaction, but they cannot touch the fundamental longing that drives us. What we're really searching for is something infinitely greater.

This restless heart of yours is actually homesickness for God Himself. And the reason you feel it is because you were created for nothing less than union with Him.

Key Teaching

"God, infinitely perfect and blessed in Himself, in a plan of sheer goodness freely created man to make him share in His own blessed life."— Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1

The Catechism begins here for good reason: this statement reveals the divine intention behind your existence.

Read it again, slowly.

You were not created merely to survive, to succeed, to be moral, or even just to serve God. You were created for something far greater: to share in God's own divine life—to be united with Him in the most intimate communion possible.

This is your purpose: union.

By "union," we don't mean losing your identity or becoming God yourself. We mean something far more beautiful: being drawn into the very love that flows between the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Think of it as God inviting you into His own family circle, not as a distant observer, but as a beloved child who truly belongs.

Before we talk about prayer techniques, moral improvement, or spiritual disciplines, you must understand this foundational truth: your life only makes sense in light of the eternal desire God has to share Himself with you. Everything else in the spiritual life flows from this reality.

Why Did God Create Us?

God is perfect in Himself. He lacks nothing. The Trinity, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, exists in perfect love, perfect joy, perfect communion. God was not lonely before creation. He did not need you, or me, or anyone else to complete Him or make Him happy.

So why did He create us?

He created you out of "sheer goodness", a phrase the Catechism uses to emphasize that all of this is pure gift. There was no divine loneliness to fill, no cosmic purpose that required your existence. God created you for one reason: because His love is so abundant that He wanted to share it.

Think of the desire parents have towards their children. Newborn babies cannot give anything back. They cannot serve, cannot contribute, or even say "thank you." Yet parents still have joy in loving them, in sharing their life with them, in watching them grow into the fullness of who they're meant to be. This is a faint echo of God's heart toward you.

"In his Son and through him, he invites men to become, in the Holy Spirit, his adopted children and thus heirs of his blessed life." — CCC 1

From the very beginning—before time, before the world, before you took your first breath—God wanted to raise you not merely as a creature who serves Him, but as a child who shares in His blessedness. This was always the plan. God didn’t just want subjects to rule over. He would have gone about that much differently. What God wants is a family. One that is perfectly loving and chooses to belong.

Divine Union

"That they may all be one... I in them and Thou in Me, that they may become perfectly one." — John 17:21-23

These are the words of Jesus praying to the Father, and He is praying for you. Jesus is asking that you and I would be drawn into the very life of the Trinity—that the love and communion He shares with the Father in the Holy Spirit would become ours.

When we speak of union with God, we're not talking about a feeling, a spiritual experience, or even a very close friendship. We're talking about something that transforms the very essence of who you are.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" It's not that we become God (as some spiritual movements suggest)—that's impossible. But God literally shares His life with us, making us partakers of what belongs to Him alone.

When you are in the state of grace, you are not simply "on God's good side" or "forgiven." Listen to what Jesus promises: "If a man loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him" (John 14:23). God has made His dwelling within your soul. The Trinity lives in you. This is the foundation of all Christian mysticism and the reason the saints could speak of experiencing heaven even on earth.

Grace is the Seed of Eternal Life

Reginald Garrigou-Lagrange, one of the great 20th-century Thomistic spiritual theologians, helped Catholics understand something profound about the grace we receive in this life. He taught that sanctifying grace is far more extraordinary than just a divine gift that makes us "acceptable" to God.

"Grace is the beginning of eternal life. It is already a participation in God's own life. What remains in heaven is only its full flowering." — The Three Ages of the Interior Life

Think of it this way: the life of God that you will live in heaven has already begun in your soul right now. Grace represents the seed of heaven itself, planted in you through baptism and nourished through the sacraments.

This is why the saints often speak of heaven not as something far away in the future, but as a reality they are experiencing now. What we call "growing in holiness" is really this divine life expanding within us, gradually transforming us from the inside out.

To be in the state of grace means that the same life that flows eternally between the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit is flowing in you, revealing and perfecting the divine life you already possess.

Your True Identity

Once you can grasp that you are created for union with a loving Father, we can start to understand what you must do to grow in the spiritual life.

<a To grow in holiness is simply to become who you are: His beloved child, destined for union with Him.

Subscribe now

Spiritual Meditation

If you are new to mental prayer, we're going to do a simple exercise to introduce you to this foundational practice of the spiritual life.

Scripture for Reflection: Ephesians 1:4-5

Preparation: Find a quiet space where you won't be interrupted for 10-15 minutes. Turn off your phone. Sit comfortably but upright. Light a candle if it helps you focus. Begin with a simple prayer: "Come, Holy Spirit, open my heart to receive what You want to show me."

Step 1: Read (1-2 minutes) Read this passage slowly, three times. Don't try to analyze or understand everything—just let the words wash over you.

"He chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. He destined us in love to be his sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will."

Step 2: Reflect (2-3 minutes) Choose one phrase that stands out to you:

"He chose us... before the foundation of the world"

"He destined us in love to be his sons"

"According to the purpose of his will"

Repeat this phrase quietly in your mind. Ask God: What are you saying to me through these words?

Step 3: Respond (2-3 minutes) Speak to God as you would a loving father. Tell Him what strikes you about this and why. If you're confused or unsettled by any of it, tell Him that too. Then ask Him whatever question may be on your mind. You might say: "God, what do You want me to know about why I exist? How do I need to change my understanding of myself to know that You created me for union with You?"

Step 4: Listen (3-5 minutes) Simply rest in God's presence. This means sitting quietly without trying to think, analyze, or figure anything out. Let your mind settle like dust in still water. If your mind begins to wander on unrelated things, gently return your attention to God. You might repeat a simple word like "Lord, keep me here with You" to help you stay focused. Don't worry if you don't "hear" anything dramatic. God often speaks in gentle impressions, quiet peace, or simple clarity. Sometimes the gift is simply being with Him.

Step 5: Journal (1-3 minutes) After your prayer, write down one word or phrase that captures what stirred in your heart during this time. Get a dedicated notebook for this purpose. We'll be using it throughout this entire program.

Key Takeaways

Before moving forward in this program, let these foundational truths settle deeply in your heart:

God created you to share in His own divine life—not just to serve Him, but to be united with Him in intimate communion.

This union is real, not symbolic—through grace, God literally dwells within your soul and shares His life with you.

Your deepest identity is "beloved child," not "broken sinner." Yes, we need redemption, but redemption restores us to our original calling: union with God.

Grace is the seed of heaven already planted in you—what you will experience fully in eternity has already begun in your soul through baptism.

Everything in the spiritual life flows from this truth—prayer, sacraments, virtue, sacrifice, and detachment all serve this one purpose: removing obstacles to union with God.

The spiritual life reveals your true identity as God sees you: His beloved child destined for union with Him.

Foundation for the Journey Ahead: This truth—that you are created for union with God—is the bedrock upon which everything else in this program will build. Without it, the spiritual life becomes either moralism (trying to earn God's love) or performance (trying to impress God with our efforts). With it, the spiritual life becomes what it truly is: learning to live as the beloved child you already are.

Reflection & Review Questions

For Personal Reflection:

1. How does understanding that you were created "out of sheer goodness" change your perspective on your relationship with God?

2. What resonates most with you about the idea that grace is "the seed of heaven" already planted in your soul?

3. In what ways have you been thinking of yourself primarily as a "sinner needing fixing" rather than a "beloved child invited into intimacy"?

4. Which aspect of union with God feels most appealing to you? Which feels most challenging or confusing?

For Deeper Consideration:

5. How might your daily life look different if you truly lived from the identity of "beloved child destined for union with God"?

6. What fears or resistances come up when you consider that God wants intimate communion with you?

7. Looking at the bullet points under "Identity Before Mission," which area (prayer, sacraments, virtue, etc.) do you most want to grow in, and why?

For Group Discussion or Spiritual Direction:

8. Share about your experience with the meditation exercise. What word or phrase did you write in your journal?

9. How does this teaching on our purpose for union compare to how you were taught about the spiritual life before?

10. What questions do you still have about union with God that you'd like to explore further?

Knowledge Check:

11. According to the Catechism, why did God create us?

12. What is the difference between human love and divine union?

13. What does Garrigou-Lagrange mean when he says grace is "the seed of eternal life"?

14. List the five ways that everything in the spiritual life flows from our identity as children created for union.

15. How is Christian union with God different from New Age concepts of "becoming divine"?

Answer Key

11. God created us "to make him share in His own blessed life" - out of "sheer goodness," not because He needed us, but because He wanted to share His love and make us His adopted children.

12. Human love involves feelings, choices, and actions between separate beings. Divine union means God actually shares His very being with us through grace, dwelling within our souls.

13. Grace is the actual beginning of eternal life, a participation in God's own life. Heaven will be the full flowering of what has already begun in our souls.

14. Prayer enters this communion• Sacraments give us a share in God's life • Virtue and detachment remove obstacles to union • Penance and sacrifice achieve detachment • Heaven is the perfection of this union

15. In Christianity, we don't become God or merge into divinity. Instead, God graciously shares His life with us while we remain fully human, invited into intimate communion with Him.

Thanks for reading!
